Oscar Castano – Tattoo Ideas, Artists and Models

In a short time, black-and-grey realism has made huge strides. Oscar Castano, an artist who creates mind-blowing work every day, is forever changing what was possible 10 years ago. Castano, a Columbian-born artist, has moved to the United States to pursue his artistic goals. Castano currently works at Under Skin Art in Bergenfield. There he has been surrounded by amazing artists, which he hopes will help him learn even more. Castano has quickly established himself as an outstanding artist in this field. He won multiple awards at tattoo conventions. Castano spoke to us about his passion for tattooing, how he got it and more.

When did you first develop an interest in art?

Since I can remember, art has always been a passion of mine. I love drawing, painting, and sculpture. I discovered art while in high school.

How did your journey to becoming a tattoo artist begin?

It was luck, and I was at the right time at the right place. It never crossed my mind that I wanted tattoo artists.

Everything was complicated at the time, there weren’t any technological aids. The only way to learn tattooing was to have someone to mentor you. He taught me little by little, and I began serving my first clients at 19 years of age. I then started full-time as a tattoo artist.

Why did you choose black-and-grey realist?

After looking at all the styles, it became clear that I was most interested in being able achieve high contrasts, shadows, and volumes using only blacks and grays. But, what drives me most is seeing how these types of tattoos heal.

What do you think about the possibility of color in the future.

It is possible. I have done it for over 10 years. I loved it. However, I decided to stop working in black-and gray after I found a passion for this color.

Is there something you don’t get tattooed enough?

Japanese style is something that I am passionate about, but I haven’t been able to do much. First, I need to understand the culture and surround myself by artists who practice this style. Then I can try to replicate it.

What are your top tattoo motifs you love to return to time and again?

These tattoos are animal tattoos. They are very easy to do and they can be done many times. I love the challenge of creating their intricate details and textures.

How do you locate your references?

When I am making animals, I usually look for photographers who are experienced in taking photos of animals. I also use search engines like Pinterest and devinart to find different references.

Many awards have been won at tattoo conventions. Do you consider tattooing competitive?

As I’ve seen at the conventions, it seems that the majority of artists are constantly working on great pieces, with which they can compete for trophies. This gives each artist great satisfaction both artistically and personally.

What should you consider when judging conventions

We meet at the jury tables to decide the criteria we will use to judge. However, I personally look at the orientation and handling of contrasts, lights, cleanliness, finishes, composition, fluidity, creativity, and proper treatment of skin.

This was easy for me because I had always wanted to tattoo in the United States. On the other hand, my shop in Colombia is managed by an extremely competitive and trusted artist who is at forefront of the industry. This has allowed me to grow my career in the United States without any worries.
