The artist requested a preliminary order, which, if granted, could have jeopardised the film’s highly anticipated release. The company could not change or edit Helms’ tattoos at that time. It was resolved eventually, as Helms’ lawsuit would have significantly impacted the franchise and third parties involved in the movie.

Whitmill had spent nearly $80,000,000 on promotion when it sought to stop the film’s release. If the court had granted the injunction to the theatres actively promoting and selling reserved tickets, they would have suffered a significant loss.

A settlement was finally reached even though the movie had already been released with its marketing posters and trailers.

Whitmil’s lawyers and WB’s legal department had a day-long mediation before the case was settled outside the court. The Hollywood Reporter reported that the settlement terms had not been disclosed.

Warner Bros. and Mr. Whitmill settled their dispute amicably. No further information will be given.”

The company made the tattoo artist sign an NDA. The film was finally released on 26 May 2011, with mixed reviews. It grossed $586.8 Million worldwide.
