Ian Garry Honors Grandfather with Tattoo Amidst Dementia Battle

UFC welterweight prospect Ian Garry is all set to take on Neil Magny at UFC 292. The undefeated fighter with a record of 4-0 in the UFC has impressed many in the world of Mixed Martial Arts, including fellow countryman Conor McGregor. The two met when Garry was weighing in for his bout at UFC 285, where they had an animated chat.

The Irish fighter has had a lot of support from his family in pursuing his dream of representing Ireland in the UFC. He has always been grateful for them, and recently, he even got a tattoo honoring his grandfather, who has dementia. Garry shared the story behind the tattoo when he posted a duet with his grandfather singing the famous John Lennon song ‘Imagine.’

Garry had this to say to reporters when inquired about the tattoo: “The tattoo is the word imagine, and I got it because of the connection to him and the song. His dementia affects his memory, but when he hears the word imagine, he starts to sing, making me smile every time. His dementia hasn’t created any barriers but made life a little more difficult and required more patience.”

Garry stated that it triggers his grandfather to sing the famous song ‘Imagine’ whenever the word is uttered. Dementia, unfortunately, has caused his beloved grandfather to lose much of his memory, and it is only getting worse by the day.

Ian Garry has another tattoo in honor of Conor McGregor

Incidentally, ‘The Future’ also has a daisy tattoo on his hand in response to McGregor tweeting, “Ian Garry, you little DAISY!” As a young Irish MMA fighter, it is no surprise that Ian Garry looks up to ‘The Notorious,’ who has paved the way for Irish fighters into the UFC.

Before Conor McGregor, there weren’t any prominent Irish fighters in the UFC, and now Ian Garry is arguably the biggest star the UFC has had since McGregor. Garry maintains his fandom for The Notorious One despite rumors of the former’s alleged betrayal.

This is how Garry described the reason for getting the tattoo: “I’ve got the tattoo of a daisy because of that man [Conor McGregor]. I’ve had a f**king wild life… the last few years. It’s been incredible. When I fought at Madison Square Garden [UFC 268], I was 23 years of age, and that was my UFC debut. I got a step back to finish exactly what Conor did to Eddie Alvarez [at UFC 205].”

“He commented on Twitter [following Garry’s victory at UFC 268], ‘Ian, you f**king daisy.’ I always ask, ‘What can I do to represent this moment?’…. And I was like the person who inspired me, motivated me to be here called me a little f**king daisy, so I’ve got a little f**king daisy in my right hand.” Continued Garry.

McGregor, on his part, has been vocal about his support for the welterweight prospect and was seen cheering for him on several occasions. Fans will be delighted to see another Irishman making waves in the UFC.
