Every November, millions of people in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and beyond wear a red poppy to remember those who died in war. For some, a paper pin is not enough, and they choose a poppy tattoo as a permanent tribute. Others love poppies simply for their bright, delicate beauty. Either way, the poppy tattoo meaning runs deeper than most people realise.

Here is what a poppy tattoo means, the history behind the remembrance poppy, what different colours represent, and design ideas.

Why the poppy became a symbol of remembrance

During the First World War, the battlefields of Flanders in Belgium and northern France were churned into mud. Yet red poppies grew there in great numbers, blooming among the graves.

In 1915, the Canadian doctor and soldier John McCrae wrote the poem In Flanders Fields after the death of a friend. It opens with poppies blowing between the crosses that mark the graves of the fallen. The poem was published in Punch magazine in December 1915 and became one of the most famous poems of the war.

Inspired by it, the American teacher Moina Michael vowed to always wear a red poppy in remembrance, and campaigned for it to become a national symbol. The Frenchwoman Anna Guérin organised poppy days to raise money for veterans and war-devastated communities. The American Legion adopted the poppy in 1920, and the Royal British Legion held its first Poppy Appeal in 1921.

What a poppy tattoo means

  • Remembrance of those who died in war.
  • Tribute to a family member who served, often with their name, regiment or service number.
  • Honouring veterans and personal military service.
  • Sleep, peace and death: in ancient Greek and Roman myth, poppies were linked with sleep and dreams, because of the sedative properties of the opium poppy.
  • Beauty and imagination, for those who simply love the flower.

Poppy colours and their meanings

  • Red: remembrance of those who died in war. The most recognisable poppy tattoo.
  • White: associated with peace and remembrance of all victims of war.
  • Purple: remembrance of animals that served and died in war.
  • California poppies: orange-gold poppies that are California's state flower, popular with Californians and nature lovers.

Tips for a poppy tattoo

  • Red needs good placement and care. Red is one of the colours most often linked to allergic reactions, so talk to your artist if you have sensitive skin. See infected tattoo signs for the difference between a reaction and infection.
  • Protect it from the sun once healed, as bright colours can fade.
  • Double check names, dates and regiments with family records before the stencil goes on.
  • Consider timing. If you want your tattoo healed for Remembrance Sunday or Veterans Day, book it at least four weeks before.
